Alien: Naturalized non-invasive. Formerly cultivated all over Cyprus for the (now defunct) silk industry and still fairly frequent - sites listed include Limassol (Division 3).
Very commonly found as wild in many areas of Cyprus. Very commonly cultivated on the island; there is virtually no city or village in Cyprus where M. alba is not found (Tsintides et al. 2002).
Probably cultivated since ancient times.
