This mealybug was found mainly on hibiscus plants (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) in private gardens, and garden centres. It was also occasionally found on grapevine (Vitis spp.) and guava (Psidium guavaja). During surveys carried out in 2010, it was found that the pest occurs throughout the island. Phytosanitary measures will be taken to contain the pest (EPPO 2011); Albizzia sp., Ligustrum sp., Jasminum sambac, Hibiscus rosasinensis [...] We detected M. hirsutus in city parks and gardens. Very high population levels were observed with large quantities of mealybug wax, deformated leaves, large amounts of honeydew and the occurence smooty mold on host plants (Ülgentürk et al. 2015).
