This finding does not come as a surprise. Madagascar periwinkle, an endemic of the eponymous island, belongs to the group of very popular ornamental and medicinal plants in subtropical and tropical regions worldwide. It is widely grown in gardens and pots in Cyprus, escapes here and there but has never been documented in detail. To be classified as ‘Casual’ as in other parts of the Mediterranean, e. g. Catalonia (Spain; Aymerich & Sáez 2019)" (Hand 2020).

As the species is not established introduction pathways are indicated in case of possible/potential escape from confinement.
