"The Pecan Aphid Monellia caryella, appeared as a new serious pest and has been noted, in recent years, to cause considerable losses to the crop (walnuts). Aphids may reduce the tree vigour and nut quality. Furthermore, the excretion of honey dew by the aphids favours the development of sooty mold with a number of other undesirable side effects. Despite the intensive spraying programme with a number of organophasphate, carbamate, or pyrethrin insecticides the results are very poor and the farmers are very disappointed. It was therefore, obvious that an urgent and effective control method was needed in order to protect the crop. Quite recently a new novel substance appeared in the market which was described, to be highly effective on aphids. It was therefore suggested to conduct a preliminary study to evaluate the efficacy of this product on Pecan aphid in comparison with an insecticide, that is already extensively used for this purpose" (Krambias 1994).
