C. rubrum belongs to a group of hygrophilous taxa and water plants that have colonised the reservoirs of Cyprus in recent decades. It appears rather probable that it was introduced by migrating or wintering waterbirds. The species is known to occur in most parts of Europe and from SW Asia to Siberia as well as in parts of N America; it is rather rare in the Mediterranean region (Uotila 2001). Currently, to be classified as non-invasive alien" (Hand 2019).
